National Child Day celebrated in the Battlefords

Rights for healthy living, healthy relationships and education are some of what the Battleford’s Children’s Charter guaranteed when it was signed in 2013. Today celebrated its implementation with a celebration at North Battleford city hall where Mayor Ryan Bater and town of Battleford’s mayor Ames Leslie signed the proclaimation for National Child Day.

“As a community, we want to develop capacity and make sure that all children in our community have a chance to lead a full and healthy life,” Bater said.

Leslie echoed Bater’s sentiments.

“We also hang the Charter inside our town hall so everybody who comes in does see that the town supports child awareness and child protection,” he said. “I think this is a great cause for our community as all children deserve to be safe.”

Colleen Sabraw, executive director of Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program, said the Charter recognizes children from birth to 18 years old.

“Children have rights. The right to a healthy living, a healthy loving family, healthy relationships, the right to education,” Sabraw added. “It’s something that we need to recognize that we all support that.”

Some of the many agencies that took part in the ceremony included Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, Kids’ First, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Catholic Family Services and the Prairie North Regional Health Authority.

The Battlefords Family Resource Network launched its Facebook page today.
